Using a Good-Quality Lubricant - It's Not a Luxury But a Must Have! Here's Why.

Lubricant – No Nightstand is Complete Without It

I always tell the ladies at my parties that no matter what age you are, there are times when your body lubricates naturally and times when it just doesn’t. This is completely normal and you shouldn’t be concerned – there’s nothing wrong with you. Just be sure have a good lube handy for those times when you do need it. If you have intercourse even a little bit dry it not only makes you sore in the morning but it can actually cause friction burns inside your vagina. These are tiny microscopic tears in your skin that can make you susceptible to infections and sexually-transmitted diseases. So it actually makes sex not only more pleasurable but much safer as well. Plus having sex when you’re not fully lubricated is just downright uncomfortable for you as well as your partner and who needs that?

There are some major misconceptions about how and when a female body lubricates. One of the most popular beliefs is that when a woman is fully aroused she’ll just be naturally wet. This is not always the case and again it’s completely normal if she’s not. Women can be very “turned on” and still need to use a quality lube. On the flip side of that, woman can be very wet and not aroused at all.

Some of the reasons that the female body produces insufficient amounts of lubricant needed for intercourse are:

  • Breast Feeding
  • Pregnancy
  • Stress
  • Being Dehydrated (always drink lots of water)
  • Certain Times of the Month - Ovulation
  • Hormonal Levels
  • Medications She Might Be Taking (i.e., Antihistimines which dry out your sinuses. Guess what else they dry out?)
  • The Amount of Alcohol She’s Consumed (remember alcohol causes dehydration)
  • Menopause
  • Simply Not Being in the Mood (it happens to all of us sometimes)

In addition, if a woman is using sex toys of any kind (especially ones that require penetration) she must ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS lubricate them. Even if she thinks her body is producing enough moisture, she’s incorrect. Toys tend to pull moisture away from the body so using lube every single time one plays with them is an absolute necessity. Not doing so can cause a woman to actually injure herself. In fact toys may need to be lubricated more than once during a single use. You don’t want them getting in the least bit dry and/or sticky. They are much different than actual skin against skin because of the materials they’re made from.

Lubricant Brands

There are many brands of lube out there and they are not all created equal. You’ll find that you might just love a particular type or brand but then discover that your best friend doesn’t like that one at all. It’s not only a personal preference issue but your body might react to a lubricant much differently than hers. You might find a certain lubricant sticky, too watery or even itchy and irritating. You might have to try a couple of them to find the perfect one for you.

Here’s an interesting fact about KY Jelly which is one of the drugstore lube brands that most people have at least heard about. It was developed for medical purposes such as vaginal or anal exams (“one finger in and one finger out” only). It was NOT designed for sex because it cannot properly stand up to the friction and repeated thrusting that happens during sex and it gets sticky and dries up too quickly. More importantly, it doesn’t give delicate skin the protection it needs for sex play like a good quality lube does. I meet quite a few women at my parties who tell me that KY is what they’ve been using and they’re either not happy with it or after they try a nicer, better quality lube they tell me it’s a whole new world. It’s just a matter of educating yourself about what’s available to you.

Types of Lubricant

The first rule of thumb when it comes to lubricant is to NEVER use an oil-based product as a lubricant. This includes things such as Vaseline, Hand Lotion, Massage Oil, etc. Oil-based products are dangerous to use vaginally because your body can’t naturally wash them out and so they stay in there and fester and cause nasty infections.

Make sure your lubricant is either water-based or silicone-based. Again this will be a personal preference and might require some experimentation with what works for your body. Water-based lubes (especially with a sizable amount of glycerin in them) tend to dry out quicker than the silicone versions. They just need to be re-applied often, or another alternative is to keep a spray bottle of water near your bed to reinvigorate your lube with a spritz of water. Some will dry up quicker than others and again this can depend on your body chemistry (and sometimes your partner’s as well). I’ve had women tell me that when they’ve switched intimate partners, they had to find a new lubricant that worked for the two of them together. Water-based lubricants are compatible with all sex toys and condoms and are the easiest to clean up.

Silicone-based lubricants are very popular and have a nice “slippery” (not wet) consistency and can keep going for a longer period of time than their water-based friends. This is because the molecules in these lubes are very large and stay on the surface of the skin instead of soaking in. My favorite silicone-based lube stays slippery for up to 45 minutes without having to be re-applied and I just love the silky feeling of it. Another huge benefit is that you can play in the water with these lubes. Water-based lubes get washed away during water play but silicone ones can make shower or tub time a whole new adventure. I’ve even had ladies tell me that silicone lube can be a fabulous sensual massage product and/or a great hair glosser that chases away the frizzies.

As far as sex toys go, it’s best NOT to use silicone lubricants with silicone toys. It’s thought that the two different types of silicone (lube being liquid and the sex toys being solid) cause a bonding effect to happen. There is no evidence that this is physically harmful but it might cause funny nubs to form on your toys and can possibly ruin them. Since silicone toys tend to be a bit more pricey than their jelly/rubber counterparts, it’s a good idea to have a bottle of water-based lubricant handy just for them, even if you prefer using silicone lube for sex with your partner.

Four of my favorite and most popular ones I sell at my lingerie parties are:

"Frolic" Specialty Lubricant - Whenever you use an adult toy of any type (including a g-spot toy), it should ALWAYS be lubricated before inserting it into your body. This is very important. "Frolic" specialty lubricant is water-based, silky, non-sticky and always enhances the use of toys by allowing them to glide over the skin without irritation. It's a great choice and a lot of ladies at my party have been very pleased with it.

"Pink" Silicone Lubricant - This is "Pink" silicone-based lube and it's my most popular one at my parties once women feel the consistency. This superior-quality product won't cause irritations or allergic reactions. In fact, it has aloe to heal the delicate tissue (to avoid soreness from overuse). Silicone can stay "slippery" for up to 45 minutes without having to re-apply and the unique thing about it is that you can use it to play in the water (so it's great for sex in the shower). Just be careful if you get some in the tub during your shower. You don't want to slip and fall! As a rule, silicone lube shouldn't be used together with silicone toys. It comes in an Italian hand-blown glass bottle so it will fit right in with your perfume bottles on your dresser! That's how beautiful it is.

"Pink" Water-Based Lubricant - This is one of the silkiest, non-sticky, hypo-allergenic lubricants on the market today. It's designed to match your natural lubrication so it will feel very natural and familiar when you use it. It's the "next best thing" to the "Pink" Silicone Lube (see above).

"Swirl" Flavored Lubricant - This "Swirl" Water-Based Lubricant is a wonderful consistency but is also flavored and doesn't leave an awful after-taste in your mouth like some flavored erotic products do. So if you want a little "tasty treat" of a lube you're going to like this. The flavors are "Blue Raspberry" (my favorite), "Green Apple", "Pina Colada" and "Cherry Vanilla".

If you’d like to purchase any of these lubricants, make a note of the item numbers of the ones you'd like to order.
