In my last ten years of selling adult toys to women, I have seen an evolution in women’s tastes and choices. More women are buying sex toys that have a high-end designer feel and look about them. Women who are style-conscious want something that looks sleek and expensive and they also want quality. Not only does this attitude apply to their clothes, shoes, purses and cell phones but it seems to have carried over into the types of adult toys they choose for themselves or as gifts to their girlfriends.
There was a time, not so long ago, that the choices for women wanting to buy a dildo or a vibrator were very limited. The toys were usually phallic-shaped, had a rubbery feel to them, were only available in either a fake-looking flesh tone or a depressing pale pink, had lots of veins on them, and were, quite frankly, ugly. They didn’t have much about them that would appeal to women and were usually looked upon as a “joke” or possibly a “gag gift” for a bachelorette party.
No wonder women didn’t have much of a desire to own an adult toy for themselves.
We’ve certainly come a long way haven’t we? Shows like “Sex and the City” , “Gossip Girl” and “Lipstick Jungle” have brought adult toys out into the mainstream and have made women decide that it’s okay to have one or two (or five). And ladies see these “classy” women talking about vibrators and they not only want to be a part of this movement but they want to have “something nice” because well, darn it, they deserve it. And they are spending the money to get it.
Adult toy manufacturers have stepped up to the plate and are determined to give women what they want! We are starting to see lines of adult toys that are classy and sleek, modern, and small enough to fit into an overnight case because, after all, they make fabulous traveling companions. As an added bonus, a lot of them are environmentally-friendly.
The proof is in the sales. Yearly sales for luxury adult toys have increased enormously over the last 5 or so years. In fact, the American company, Jimmyjane, reported a 35% increase in sales over the last year. This company boasts that they sold Kate Moss a $325 gold-plated vibrator. Wow!
Are Only Single Women Buying These Toys?
Absolutely not! In fact, a lot of women are excited about having these gorgeous-looking toys because they can feel more confident about introducing them to a partner. That was a little uncomfortable to do when the only thing you had to pull out of your nightstand was something big, phallic-shaped and horribly unattractive.
There is definitely an increasing demand by couples for adult toys to be used to “spice” up things in the bedroom. Men are beginning to see sex toys as a good thing (and not a threat) in their relationships. They can be a helpful tool for men to use in the process of getting a woman aroused (which can sometimes take awhile without a toy).
